The RhB railway network

The Albula line

The line running from Chur over thusis, filisur towards st. Moritz is called the Albula line. It is called like that because it follows the flow of the river albula towards the albula pass. The actual pass is done by a train tunnel of 5.8 km. Building onto the tunnel started in 1898 both in Preda (north side) and Spinas (south side). Building the tunnel was not an easy matter. A total of 16 lifes and 177 seriously injured was the result. The connection was made on 29th may 1902 and on 15th april 1903 the tunnel was finished. Figure 1: Overview of the entire RhB network

But certainly not only the tunnel was an amazing project. The entire line actually is. Starting at 584 meters above sea level in Chur the line heads up towards 1823 meters inside the albula tunnel. Because of the huge altitude difference the lines are build like art. The most spectacular track is between Filisur at 1080 meter and Preda at 1789 meter. Here the line curls to keep down the slope of the tracks. Tunnels and bridges are used to change the lines from one side to the other side of the narrow albula valley. Other fantastic works of art are the Solisbrücke and the Landwasser viaduct. Figure 3 shows the Landwasser viaduct. It is about 65 meters high and 142 meters long. It is a complete stone construction and it is curved with a radius of 100 meters. It is known to be the most famous railway bridge of Switserland.
The Solisbrucke is a stone brigde over the river Albula. The bridge is about 90 meters above the river, which flows under in the very narrow valley. This bridge is also build of natural rock and it was build in 1901/1902.
